Speed bumps being installed in Alton village

Speed bump signA series of speed bumps is being installed in Alton village, in an attempt to calm theme park traffic from Alton Towers.

The £40,000 scheme is being funded by Staffordshire County Council.

More than 900 vehicles per hour can pass through the village during peak times.

Residents have complained about speeding traffic for a number of years and called on Alton Towers to fund the construction of a £12 million bypass in 2008, but the park rejected the idea.

It told Alton Parish Council there was no need for a relief road for village traffic problems which only lasted six weeks of the summer school holidays each year.

The park’s £6 daily car parking charge is thought to generate in excess of £3 million per year.
