Bottons Pleasure Beach, Skegness
3 star review

If you’re entering from the main road, Pleasure Beach Skegness – or Bottons Pleasure Beach – now welcomes you with a stylish wooden boardwalk.

Gift shops and cafes adorn this fairly charming setup, which is a modern touch of class to this conventional seaside amusement park.

It remains in the old style – a free admission, walk-up attraction, where a pay-per-ride option survives.

Wristbands are also available, at £25 for full access on this busy August Saturday.

The rollercoasters are popular, including the very bespoke Runaway Train which is a hit with families.

But the staff are somewhat inconsistent. Some find it too difficult to smile and barely talk, while others are friendly and warm.

Old-school

Lincolnshire’s form of Pleasure Beach features a modern cocktail bar and questionable use of the Rolling Stones’ logo in the well-named Snack in the Mouth fast food outlet.

There are large queues for kiosks as people still line up to buy tokens and wristbands deep into the early evening.

The automated self-service machines are quicker to access, with rides typically costing about three tokens – £1 per piece – each.

Strangely, expect to receive several Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach tokens among what you are given.

Meanwhile, the Ghost Train – in existence since the late 1970s – retains a classic retro vibe, as does the Pirate Ship opposite.

We saw no trouble, even as some walk around with alcohol throughout the afternoon.

A couple of people asked to get off the dodgems for breaking the rather strict no bumping rule was the only form of insubordination on display.

Meanwhile, run-of-the-mill arcades and scores of predictably tacky souvenirs and unhealthy sweets mean that the park is has everything you’d expect from a trip to the seaside.

Pleasure Beach Skegness remains a valued old-school, walk-up seaside attraction that sees a bustling atmosphere during the summer.

While this business model appears to be a dying breed, the Botton family prove that it is still able to provide a safe an enjoyable atmosphere.
