The record for the world’s largest portion of chips has been broken at Adventure Island in Southend.

448kg of chips were piled into a giant chip box at the theme park, beating the previous record by over 79kg.

Five staff from the Traditional Fish & Chip Shop worked for four hours, peeling, chipping and frying £150 worth of potatoes.

Many of the chips were sold off for £1 a serving, with the proceeds going to local breast cancer charity Bosom Pals.

The remainder are reportedly being sent to a local farm, where they will be fed to a heard of pigs.

Head of catering, and one of the five-man team, James Gibbs said: “It’s absolutely fantastic. It’s taken a long while, many months to plan it. It’s wonderful. It’s something that from when we were kids at school we used to dream about breaking a Guinness World Record.”
