Thorpe Park visitors fall in 2012 despite Swarm

ColossusThorpe Park recorded a 10% fall in visitor numbers last year, despite the installation of the £18 million rollercoaster The Swarm.

Figures from the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) reveal that the park recorded an attendance of 1.8 million guests last season, 200,000 down on the 2011 attendance.

The park’s operator – Merlin Entertainments – also recorded a considerable visitor drop at its flagship theme park Alton Towers.

The Staffordshire resort had 2.4 million admissions according to the TEA, a 250,000 (or 9.4%) drop on last season’s gate of 2.65 million guests.

The TEA report said: “UK parks took a triple hit from continuing economic recession, cold and wet weather and the London 2012 Olympic Games.”

However, Merlin had a 5.4% rise at Legoland Windsor, which welcomed 2 million guests.
