Alton Towers closed the Wicker Man rollercoaster on Friday morning after smoke was seen emanating from its track.
The wooden ride’s queue line was evacuated of guests and alarms could be heard during the late morning.
Footage on X showed smoke-like emanation from the ride’s track, well away from the programmed fire effects of the central theming structure.
No flames could be seen in the footage, and Alton Towers said that the smoke had been caused by a “foreign object”.
Workers were later photographed in that section of track, with a fire extinguisher present.
Treated wood
“Operations on Wicker Man were paused after reports of smoke in the ride area,” a spokesman told the Stoke Sentinel newspaper.
“Our technical team swiftly attended to the smoke and followed well-rehearsed procedures to quickly resolve the issue.
“Wicker Man is constructed with treated wood which inhibits fire ignition.
“At this stage we believe the cause of the smoke was the result of a foreign object.”
Alton Towers added that Wicker Man would be be closed until further notice while carried out “essential maintenance”.
The 2018-built ride was marketed as been as the world’s first rollercoaster experience “fusing” wood and fire.
