Universal Studios has confirmed that it is in the early stages of planning a new theme park in the UK.
As reported on Monday, the Comcast-owned American business has recently acquired almost 500 acres of land in Bedfordshire.
Speaking to various media outlets on Tuesday, a Universal Destinations and Experiences spokesperson confirmed that it had acquired land.
A spokesperson said: “[we are] at the early stages of exploring its feasibility for a potential park and resort at this site.
“It will be many months before we are ready to make a decision to proceed and we look forward to engaging with all relevant stakeholders and the local community,” they added.
‘UK an attractive place’
Comcast has taken a controlling stake in Cloud Wing UK Limited, owners of a brownfield site in Kempston Hardwick, Bedfordshire.
The company also registered the domain names UniversalStudiosGreatBritain.com and UniversalGreatBritain.com in September this year.
Comcast’s latest report filed with the United States Securities Exchange Commission said that about £214 million had been spend of the acquisition of new land.
On Tuesday, the BBC quoted a Universal spokeswoman as saying the UK was an “attractive place” for a potential park.
“We are always looking at new locations around the world, including in Europe, and the UK is an attractive place for a potential project,” she said.
“The UK has a large population, creative industries, strong tourism, and transportation infrastructure with close proximity to other parts of Europe.”
