Three people were thrown from a twist-style fairground ride in Cardiff on Saturday, sustaining injuries.

The ride – operating under the name of ‘Ice Skater Sizzler’ – is at the Welsh capital’s Winter Wonderland fairground event.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said that three people were hurt when they were “thrown from the ride”.

“HSE is investigating reports of serious injuries on a ride at Winter Wonderland in Cardiff. Three people were thrown from the ride,” a press release said.

One person remains at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and is being treated for what are understood to be serious injuries.

‘Bars flung open’

The twist ride – whose design is also known as a ‘sizzler’ – remains closed as the HSE undertakes its investigation.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the ride’s restraints failed to keep passengers within their seats.

Laura Rogers told WalesOnline that staff said “bars” had “flung open” in the incident, which occurred shortly after 17:00 on Saturday.

Ms Rogers said: “It was shocking to see for my five-year-old daughter who goes on this ride – also for everyone that had to witness it happening when they only went out for a good time.”

Event organisers Orchard said: “We are working closely with the ride owner/operator and all relevant organisations to investigate. The ride will remain closed during this time.”
