Rumba Rapids, Thorpe Park

Thorpe Park has announced that the Rumba Rapids water ride has been closed permanently.

The 1987-built Intamin-manufactured ride was one of the oldest rides at the Surrey theme park.

Due to the levels of staff and water pumping required, rapids rides are relatively expensive to operate.

As with most rapids-style rides in the UK, operational procedures have been changed to align with regulatory guidance issued in recent years.

The effect of this was to increase staff numbers monitoring Rumba Rapids.

The ride’s closure marks the end of one of Thorpe Park’s last major 1980s installations, when the park transitioned to a modern theme park.

Rapids rides across the UK have been subject to removals and reduced operating hours in recent years due to their high costs.

Alton Towers announced earlier this week that its Congo River Rapids ride would not open until May this season.
