Scenic Railway, Dreamland Margate

Dreamland Margate has announced the permanent closure of its vintage rollercoaster the Scenic Railway.

The 1920 wooden ride was rebuilt in 2015, but has remained closed since an incident in 2024.

Considerable damage to the ride’s wooden base sitting between the steel rail plates was photographed by park guests.

It was the oldest rollercoaster in the UK, with that title now taken by Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s Big Dipper ride.

Dreamland’s Scenic Railway was a Grade II* listed structure, and the amusement park said it had taken the decision to close the ride after consulting Historic England.

It will remain standing, and the park said it would be working on a new ways in which guests can enjoy the ride in ways other than it being an operational rollercoaster.

“This is not the end but a new beginning,” Dreamland said.

“We are committed to developing a new long-term vision that will not only showcase this remarkable Grade II listed structure, but reimagine its purpose so it can continue to be enjoyed by future generations in a fresh and meaningful way.”

On Facebook, the park is calling for suggestions as to how the Scenic Railway structure can be enjoyed.
