Nemesis Reborn, Alton Towers

Merlin Entertainments is set to restructure its Merlin Magic Making operation at Alton Towers.

30 artistic and theming-based positions are expected to be made redundant following a 45-day consultation period.

Merlin cited “market challenges” in its letter to employees, the StokeonTrentLive website reported today.

The move follows a widely-understood downturn in trading at Merlin Entertainments’ attractions in 2024, with several cost-saving measures applied this season.

Merlin said it would use external contractors to provide theming to its operations going forward, rather than an in-house operation.

“Outsourcing theming production fits with our global strategy – we don’t plan to make it a core area of expertise,” the company was reported to have told staff.

In a statement released on Friday, Merlin said that a “strategic review” was behind the move to remove its operation at Alton Towers.

“With several sites across the UK, Merlin Magic Making supports attractions worldwide, driving innovation and setting a new standard for themed experiences.

“As an international business, we regularly conduct strategic reviews into how we can evolve the delivery of the business, including our future theming projects.

“Colleague feedback on any proposed changes will be thoughtfully considered every step of the way.”
