Merlin Entertainments has been awarded an operational contract to run Blackpool’s Sandcastle Waterpark from September.

Owned by Blackpool Council, who awarded the contract, the Sandcastle attraction is close to the town’s South Pier and the Pleasure Beach amusement park.

The announcement takes Merlin’s total number of operated attractions in Blackpool to nine.

Lynn Williams, leader of Blackpool Council, said: “The Sandcastle Waterpark is one of the council’s big success stories.

“We have an established relationship with Merlin Entertainments in terms of operating some of our key tourism assets and we are confident that this appointment will take the Sandcastle Waterpark on to the next level.”

Merlin said that it was “thrilled” to be adding the waterpark to its portfolio of attractions.

“We firmly support Blackpool’s ambition to be the UK’s number one family seaside resort and this partnership is another step forward in delivering this vision,” said Kate Shane, Merlin’s regional director.
