Galactica: VR removed from Alton Towers rollercoaster

Alton Towers has confirmed that virtual reality headsets have been removed from the Galactica rollercoaster.

The ride operated as Air between 2002 and 2016, when it was re-themed to space-themed Galactica and featured the VR element.

Last season the park began operating it without the VR headsets intermittently.

The fitting of the devices onto guests’ heads caused longer queues for the Bolliger & Mabillard-manufactured ride.

At its launch, Galactica was marketed as being the world’s first rollercoaster “dedicated to virtual reality”.

Alton Towers said on Twitter that the decision to remove the VR headsets was taken in response to guest feedback.

The Staffordshire theme park begins its 2019 season on 23 March.
