Icon opening ‘likely to be Spring Bank Holiday’

Blackpool Pleasure Beach managing director Amanda Thompson has said that the new Icon rollercoaster’s opening date is likely to be late May.

Responding to a Twitter user who suggested an Early May Bank Holiday opening, Thompson said “it is more likely to be Spring Bank Holiday”.

The UK has two bank holidays in May. Early May, which this year falls on the 7th of the months, and Spring, which falls on 28 May in 2018.

In recent years, Pleasure Beach has ‘soft’ opened new attractions ahead of ‘grand openings’ at a later date.

It is unclear if the Spring Bank Holiday date suggested would form a soft or grand opening.

Icon is a double-launching rollercoaster from German manufacturers Mack Rides, with a construction budget of £16.25 million.

Marketed with the tagline ‘dare to ride’, track installation was completed on 14 February.

It is the first major rollercoaster commissioned for construction by the Lancashire amusement park since 1994’s Big One.
