Merlin facing trial over 2007 Warwick Castle death

Merlin Entertainments will face trial next year over the death of a man that occurred at the grounds of Warwick Castle in 2007.

72-year-old George Frederick Towney fell from the castle’s bridge, landing in the dry moat some 15 feet below.

He sustained fatal neck and head injuries after he stumbled and fell over a low parapet, which was only 39cm high according to the prosecution.

Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd has pleaded not guilty at Warwick Crown Court to two charges under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

The trial, which could last in excess of a week, will take place in April next year.
